HOTEL ATWATER

Just a short one-hour boat ride from Newport Beach, lies the recently refurbished Hotel Atwater, located in Avalon, on Santa Catalina Island.

An elegant board and batten detail line the walls, with what feels like a comforting invitation to come in, sit down, and relax the day away. There were no lines or delays as we approached the front desk to check in. Staff was friendly and attentive, and were quick to offer up opinions and suggestions on the best places to shop and eat.

The hotel is located close to the center of town, so just a hop and skip out the front doors, and you’ll find yourself walking along the main ocean-front drag. But this can’t just be a review of the hotel without an acknowledgement of the island and some of what it has to offer.

There are several places to grab a bite to eat, shop and pick up a souvenir or two. Continue on down the street a little further and you’ll find yourself at Casino. But don’t expect this Casino to be the same as the ones you might find in Las Vegas. Nope. This one is used for private and corporate events and weddings. And when standing outside the front doors, be sure to look up and admire the beautiful artwork of undersea life and mermaids that adorns the walls.

Around the corner from the Casino is the Descano Beach Club, where you can enjoy food and drinks while sitting on the sand taking in the sun and surf. Here you’ll also find zip lining, a fun and exhilarating activity for the whole family. Definitely a highlightable adventure worth doing.

The island also has other activities, including a glass bottom boat ride, scuba diving, fishing, island tours (where you’ll likely spot a bison or two), scooter rentals and much more.
